Homegrown: Dead Sara

Music history is rich with rock bands fronted by dynamic duos. Looking to carry on this yin and yang tradition are two talented young female musicians — vocalist Emily Armstrong and guitarist Siouxsie Medley, who front the electrifying four-piece rock band Dead Sara. Rounding out the band in the rhythm section are drummer Sean Friday and bassist Chris . Formed in Los Angeles, Dead Sara have earned the respect of some of the biggest names in rock and roll, including Foo Fighters’ Dave Grohl, who said in a 2013 interview that the band “should be the next biggest rock band in the world.” In a 2012 interview with The Wall Street Journal, legendary Jefferson Airplane vocalist Grace Slick said she admires Armstrong’s “strong, urgent sound.” That same year the band went on their first national tour opening for GRAMMY winners Muse. Formed by high school friends Armstrong and Medley, Dead Sara released their self-titled debut album in April 2012. Produced by Noah Shain (Skrillex) and released on the band’s own label, Pocket Kid Records, Dead Sara featured the Top 40 Billboard Rock Songs hit “Weatherman.” On March 31 the band released their highly anticipated sophomore set, Pleasure To Meet You. From the ferocious opening one-two punch of “Suicidal” and “L.A. City Slum,” songs made to ignite an audience live, the quartet deliver a savage message to listeners that they are intent on fulfilling all of the promise of their first album. Also produced by Shain and released on Pocket Kid Records, the album peaked at No. 2 on Billboard’s Heatseekers Albums chart and features the upbeat, feel-good single “Something Good” and the rhythmic “Mona Lisa.” Known for their devout fan base, the Deadicated, and ferocious spectacle of high-octane live performances, Dead Sara will perform two sold-out nights at the legendary Troubadour on May 12–13. The GRAMMY Museum welcomes Dead Sara to the Clive Davis Theater for an intimate performance and discussion surrounding their new album and L.A. roots, moderated by Scott Goldman, Vice President of MusiCares and the GRAMMY Foundation.
