In partnership with the UCLA Chicano Studies Research Center, and in conjunction with the GRAMMY Museum’s Songs of Conscience, Sounds of Freedom exhibition, the GRAMMY Museum is thrilled to host a panel discussion featuring musicians Mark Guerrero, Little Willie G, along with UCLA’s Dr. Veronica Terriquez, and moderator Dr. Melissa Hidalgo. The panel will discuss topics including the history of the Chicano Movement, the music tied to the music (both then and now), and the personal narratives of the artists from East LA as featured in the exhibition. Following the panel discussion, there will be a performance from Mark Guerrero and others. Attendees will also have an opportunity to view the Songs of Conscience, Sounds of Freedom exhibition before or after the program.
Earlier this year, the GRAMMY Museum launched its Songs of Conscience, Sounds of Freedom exhibition. The Museum’s inaugural exhibition when first opening in 2008, this exhibition was brought back in 2022 as a revamped retrospective, enhanced with new stories, particularly surrounding the various social movements that have surfaced in recent years and the new and powerful music that has been created because of these movements.
Songs of Conscience, Sounds of Freedom examines socially conscious music on a national level dating back to the American Revolution, however, it also takes a closer look at the music that has been (and is being) created by members of our local communities. “The Sounds of Los Angeles” is a newly expanded section within the exhibition, exploring Los Angeles-based social movements and events that have inspired protest songs spanning a variety of genres and communities, including the Chicano Movement that formed during the 1960s and 1970s, the 1965 Watts Riots/Rebellion, the 1992 Riots/Uprising, and the city’s history of poverty and economic disparity, gang violence, and police corruption. There also is a spotlight on music associated with—and created during the era of—El Movimiento. Featured artists include Lalo Guerrero, Mark Guerrero, Frost, Kim Weston, Randy Savvy of Compton Cowboys, Chuck D, and more.
